The examination of suspected bullet holes in clothing, bodies, and other objects for the presence of lead and copper can frequently provide valuable information such as whether the damage was caused by a bullet, whether the bullet was copper jacketed, and the angulation of penetration.
Our Bullet Hole Examination Kit provides all of the chemical reagents and supplies required to perform analyses for the presence of lead and copper wipe around suspected bullet holes. The kit contains 24 complete sets of pre-measured reagents (contained in dropper bottles), filter paper, positive lead and copper control strips, and instructions for use. A set of refill reagents is also available to reorder. The kit is packaged in a durable, lightweight plastic case with foam for easy and safe transport from one crime scene to another.
It is suggested to conduct a positive and negative control test before testing the suspected area. Both lead and copper positive control strips are supplied for conducting the positive control. Both tests are conducted by adding 3-5 drops of either the Lead Reagent A or Copper Reagent A to a piece of filter paper allowing the entire sheet to become wet. The filter paper is then pressed directly upon the suspected bullet hole for about 30 seconds. Take either the Lead Reagent B or Copper Reagent B tube from the case and squeeze the plastic tube to crush the glass vial contained within the plastic tube. Shake to completely mix the contents of the tube. Turn the tube downwards and gently squeeze the plastic tube to release 1-2 drops of the reagent onto the filter paper. For the lead test, the appearance of a red/purple color on the filter paper indicates the presumptive presence of lead. For the copper test, the appearance of a green/black color on the filter paper indicates the presumptive presence of copper.
