Instructor: Heidi Nichols, CFPH

Course length: 8 hours

The photographic documentation of evidence and injuries on the bodies of sexual assault victims is important in the prosecution of sexual assaults and other crimes such as homicides involving sexual assaults.  Having well exposed, properly composed photographic images to show the judge or jury can mean the difference between a good witness and a great one.

This one-day, Sexual Assault Photography Workshop, course provides instruction in the use of the digital camera to document injuries and trace evidence recovered on the body of the sexual assault victim.  The course begins with a brief review of basic photography and goes on to cover techniques that can be used to effectively document patterned injuries and bruising.  Equipment considerations will also be discussed.  Emphasis is placed on specialized photographic and lighting techniques that produce meaningful images that are admissible in court.  Lighting techniques covered in this course include the use of the Alternate Light Source to locate and photograph trace evidence such as hair, fibers, and body fluids on clothing and on the body of the victim.

This Sexual Assault Photography Workshop course will be of interest to sexual assault nurse examiners, forensic nurses, forensic photographers and those who are tasked with the photographic documentation of injuries on sexual assault victims’ bodies.

All material covered in lectures will be reinforced with hands-on practical exercises.
